Banana is considered to be the perfect convenient food. It is one of the best known tropical fruit. It is being harvested every day of the year. There are altogether about 400 varieties of bananas. The banana plant which has an elongated fan-like leaves can grow tall to about 4 meters long. Bananas are not only extremely nutritious but they are also rich in potassium, riboflavin, niacin and dietary fiber. They contain vitamins A, C and iron too. It is a known fact that bananas are harvested unripe and they are then stored in humid atmosphere in order to ripen slowly. Unripe bananas are green in color and generally inedible. However, raw bananas can be used for making ice cream and milk shakes. You can even add sliced bananas in fruit salads. But one cannot enjoy eating banana when it is too ripe and becomes brown all over. Do not buy bananas which has damaged skins or the ones that are too ripe.
Each banana contains about 16 per cent of fiber, 15 per cent of vitamin c and 11 per cent of potassium which is perfect for us, on a daily basis. It also contains 75 per cent of water. One can get rid of a hangover by consuming banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. Based on a research in “The New England Journal of Medicine”, if a person makes a habit of eating bananas as part of his or her regular diet, he or she will then be able to cut the risk of death from strokes, to a level of 40 percent. Green bananas contain less sugar, if compared to the yellow ones. You can boil; bake, fried or you can even grill them. People also use the banana leaves to eat on them. Bananas have a high energy value and they are mostly good for children who are growing and should also be consumed by the athletes.
